Engagement

Day 5 of being held hostage by early labor.

Oh, and around noon today a certain little lady must have engaged, because I suddenly have sciatic pain from my right butt-cheek, all down along my right leg.

The only upside of that is I get to walk around pretending I'm actually British and saying, "Ow, me bum!"

Now, I've read that when second/subsequent babies engage, it tends to mean labor is imminent or already happening.  However, we all know those are averages and standards, and not necessarily applicable to every single situation.

Thus, I'm not hopping around on my good leg screaming "Yay yay yay!  Full moon baby today!"

I'm hobbling around, shrugging and saying, "Yeah.  So?  She'll be here sometime soon.  Tonight.  A fortnight.  Whatever."

It helps that I have the January issue of Elle, which I've been flipping through today, and Kate Morton's The Secret Keeper, which I'm about a third of the way through reading.  I also knocked out a good two hours of time playing Pokemon Monopoly with Gavin, who kicked my aching arse quite thoroughly thanks to his aggressive PokeCenter and PokeMart (houses and hotels) development strategy.

Well, if you don't hear from me for a few days, you'll know why.

But, honestly, I don't think you'll be spared from my babbling any time soon.

  1. Technically it's not early labor. Since you're at what, 39 weeks?

    1. 38 weeks. :)

But you know what I mean - early labor is that time when the cervix opens from 0 cm to 3 cm. Of course, I'll find out more on Wednesday at my appointment. Wish it would hurry!

My sister tried urging me to go to the hospital to get checked, but I'm not wasting gas just to be told I can turn around and go home. Nor do I want to be stuck there having made very little progress, because then I'll have no freedom (they monitor and do an IV), and I won't be allowed to eat.

      Staying home is better.

    2. Sounds like your sister may be a teeny bit excited and full of anticipation. :)

I know you are, too. Sending good thoughts your way. And some onesies this week, too.

    3. She is VERY excited - this is her first niece! She's got 2 boys and 2 girls, plus a bonus son from her marriage. But she never expected me to have a second, and was content to be aunt to one nephew.

Heck... *I* never expected me to have a second! So there's a whole lot of excitement all around.

Just, argh, waiting! Painfully. Thank goodness for distractions.

  3. I never wish sciatica on anyone. Hopefully she shifts or it doesn't last long. Be well!

  4. Thank you ladies! She's just... ARGH.

Dora, my first was a breeze. This one is very different. I don't know if it's because we're talking male vs. female hormones, or different DNA from the dad.

Either way, it's a reminder that every pregnancy truly is different, even in the same woman. :)
